This piece was written in June of 2020. For 6 or 7 years preceeding this time, I had become increasingly enamored with the music of Nik Bartsch, specifically the work with his band Ronin. I had seen a performance in Sarasota in March, 2019 and was blown away.
His music focuses a lot on poly-metric structures. Each individual part simple in and of itself, but stacked on top of each other they create comfortable complexity. The compositions require patience on both the part of the player and the listener. The musicians slowly build their structure until they all fall into a deep pocket that you don’t often find in odd time signatures.
These are the elements that inspired me most at this time and what catylised this piece.
